Recent Loyola bioinformatics graduates Steven Reisman and Mike Shaffer receive Honorable Mentions for the CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award

Recent Loyola bioinformatics graduates Steven Reisman and Mike Shaffer were selected as Honorable Mentions for the Computing Research Association’s Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award. Please join me in congratulating them on this distinction and wishing them well for the future!

Steven’s research project in Dr. Catherine Putonti’s lab takes an evolutionary perspective in identifying putative regions within in viral genomes that could be targeted for either RNAi therapies or diagnostic markers. Starting this fall, Steven is continuing at Loyola to pursue an MS in computer science.

Mike’s research project, also in Dr. Catherine Putonti’s lab, combines computational and bench efforts in the investigation of the evolution of the CRISPR/Cas system within prokaryotes. Mike has already trained a first-year student to take over before entering the PhD program at the University of Colorado this fall.
